What did the regional study find?
In winter 2018–2019, 21% of 1,047 participating KFL&A households measured above 200 Bq/m³.
Southeast Public Health now reports the historical KFL&A study results. The study covered Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington—not Kingston alone—so the regional percentage should not be described as a city-wide rate.
What did the City of Kingston report?
The City says 15.7% of 615 tested Kingston homes exceeded 200 Bq/m³ in results shared in August 2019.
This is a useful city-specific data point from participating homes. It still cannot tell a homeowner what will be measured in a specific property.
Why can neighbouring houses be different?
Radon entry depends on the soil beneath the home, foundation details, cracks and openings, drainage features, heating and ventilation, and pressure differences. Small differences in construction and operation can produce very different readings.
What is the local recommendation?
The practical message is simple: radon exists in our area, and only a long-term test can estimate the level in your home. The City recommends at least 91 days during winter, and Health Canada’s updated guide provides the detailed placement and interpretation rules.
A note about newer homes
The City says current Ontario Building Code requirements include radon-control provisions for new homes. A rough-in is preparation for possible future mitigation; it does not replace testing or prove that the indoor level is low.
